Sports Talk: Kubb, a New Yard Game Favorite

As a correspondent sports writer for The Casey County News, I write an weekly editorial column for the publication. Published June 12, 2013.

Reunions and outdoor picnics come with several staples: good food and enjoyable company. Hopefully there is pleasant weather and, for a definite good time, there will also be music and yard games.

Horseshoes and croquet have been around quite a long time. Cornhole (or beanbag toss as some may call it) and yard golf (or hillbilly golf) have become more and more common in the past decade or so.

These games are great for multiple reasons:
   (1) Anyone can play because being good doesn’t matter that much.
   (2) They are easy to set up, take down and transport
   (3) Most can be made yourself out of basic materials

A new game has come to my attention this spring and summer, and the more I see it played the more I’m convinced it’s a winner.

Kubb, also known as “Viking Chess”, is often described as a combination of bowling and horseshoes. The object of the game to knock over wooden blocks with sticks.

Yes, I know. It sounds extremely primitive… but maybe that’s why they call it Viking Chess? And keep in mind… Throwing bean bags at a hole doesn’t sound that much better! But as most of us know, the competition quickly turns to fun.

One of the best parts of Kubb is that it’s easy to play with a large group of people. While most other yard games are played in two teams of two (four people total), Kubb is usually played by at least teams of three (six total) or even more. Six sticks are thrown on each team’s turn, easily allowing six per team and 12 players total.

This past weekend I attended my cousin’s high school graduation celebration. My older brother was given a Kubb set several years ago by our uncle who made the set himself. For whatever reason, this spring was the first time my brother actually got the game out and learned how to play, but it has been a hit at every gathering so far.

With a large amount of people at last weekend’s event, I think most who ended up trying Kubb first did so because the other games were full. However, by the end of the evening, it was the only game being played and had turned into quite the scene.

Several of my uncles and cousins had been playing earlier in the afternoon when the graduate and several of his friends decided it was their turn to play. Rather than turning the field over to the group of high school grads, those previously playing took it as a challenge and said they had to earn the field first. Next thing I knew, it had turned into a game of about eight vs. eight. The high school graduates verses the “adults”.
This made me laugh, being that the “adult” team was primarily composed of my brother, husband and cousins and their significant others. Being that we all graduated high school and college around the same time and are in our late 20s, being called the “adults” by 18-19 year-olds felt pretty funny, but I guess it just means we’re getting old!

While the younger team originally took the challenge from the “adults” in order to get in a victory and then be able to play themselves, it turned into an on-going event of endless games until cell phone lights were being used to find the sticks in the dark.

Watching them from the deck above the field my cousin who had never played or heard of the game, saw the scene of 15-20 people playing and watching and asked, “So, they’re just throwing sticks around??” It’s hard not to laugh at such a simple idea, but you might be surprised how fun and competitive it gets.

If you’ve not yet heard of or played Kubb, look it up online. Sets can be purchased or easily made. You could be the first to introduce your friends and family to a new yard game favorite!

Sports Talk: Fun with Frisbees

As a correspondent sports writer for The Casey County News, I write an weekly editorial column for the publication. Published Mar. 20, 2013.
A disc, or Frisbee, is a very under appreciated item in the sports and recreation world.
The simple flat, round flying saucer like item can be used in so many ways to bring entertainment and what’s even better—anyone can do it. No really. I cannot throw a Frisbee straight to save my life.
But even this weekend, I found myself tossing one between myself (who is not very good), my husband (who can throw one in the exact direction he intends for a solid distance) and our three year old nephew (who doesn’t know the difference in throwing it outward and overhanded).
If you’ve never actually used a Frisbee for sport, you’re missing out. Throwing with a dog is great practice, particularly if the dog is trained at retrieving; then it doesn’t matter what direction the disc ends up going, you get it back. But beyond fetch with an animal, there are two games I’ve enjoyed with a disc, despite my inability to throw one straight or far.
One is Frisbee golf. If you’ve ever been to a park and seen the metal structures standing about four feet high with chains hanging down and wondered what the world they are for (I always thought they looked like some sort of space craft), now you know they are for Frisbee golf.
You can actually buy different style discs, similar to the way you have different clubs on the golf course. There are putters and drivers, etc. For me it doesn’t make a lot of difference what kind of disc I’m throwing, I end up in the trees (very similar to my actual golf game). You don’t have to have multiple discs to play the game. One will suffice; however they are smaller than the typical Frisbee.
It’s a fun relaxing activity. If you’ve never played, consider it on one of the non-rainy days this spring. Parks all over Kentucky have courses including one at Henry Jackson Park in Danville, Ky. You can also find them in Somerset, Harrodsburg, Nicholasville—the list goes on.
The second game I enjoy is quite the opposite of Frisbee golf. Aside from involving a disc, Ultimate Frisbee is basically the reverse style game. It is extremely fast-paced and far from what I would call relaxing. Think of it as soccer but with a disc. You’re constantly moving and playing with a team of others.
The beauty of this sport, much like soccer, is that it can be played anywhere with some open space. While competitive leagues exist and official field sizes and goals also exist, a playing field can be any size and a goal can simply be deemed as the space between two objects.
Some people play the sport regularly through the summer, but, again, you do not have to be practiced in it to play. You may not get picked first for teams, but if you’re like me, it doesn’t bother you that much anyway. (I know I’m not very good…)
As the weather turns, consider learning more about one or both of these sports and see what friends may be interested as well. If you’re the highly competitive type and want to stay active through summer, I suggest Ultimate Frisbee. Do some research and see what leagues might be nearby. If you just want a fun activity to enjoy with friends this summer, see what parks near you have a Frisbee golf course.

Things that make me smile....

It's been a busy May, just like it was a busy April. The good news is it's been good either way. Sorry for the lack of posts. I wish I had time to write and post pictures more frequently, but maybe later in the summer once these two weddings are past that I am in the first two weekends in June.

In the mean time... a few things that make me happy:
Jackamo getting his summer cut--done by none other than me & my Mingus!
Flowers picked for me by my Mingus! :)

Fishing... Just like Riding A Bike

Last weekend was absolutely beautiful, especially in my off and away land in Central Kentucky. I was fortunate enough to spend the entire weekend at home and spend some time with visiting family. My cousin, who also lives on the family property, has three kids--two sons and a daughter--and their dad took them fishing at our pond on Saturday.

The oldest son is almost 10 and I believe the other is going on 8 while her daughter just turned 5. Their dad, quite fond of fishing, was excited to hear from the hubs that the pond was seeming to be quite full of fishies as of late and was more than happy to take the kids over.

Meanwhile, my grandmother, fondly referred to as Grammo by me and many others, was having one of those mornings/days where she was slow to get moving. At age 87, she is typically overwhelmed in a day's time with so many "tasks" that include taking morning, lunch, dinner and night pills and supplements, getting her knee brace and foot pads on and getting her "walking" in. With early alzheimers, she is often times discouraged by the things she no longer feels capable of doing. We have all learned, though, that her best days are those when she gets outside--which is more often with the spring weather.

My cousin got helped her fix up a lunch plate and the two of them came out to the patio to eat and enjoy the fresh air. I joined them about the time the kiddos were making it back from the pond. Grammo had just heard where they'd been and was quite excited, asking them about their fishing fun. "Gosh," she said. "I can just remember doing that! I feel like I still could sometimes!" and she'd mimic casting. Conversation went on to other topics and we sat on the patio for the next 30 minutes or so chatting. About the time I was off to other things Grammo brought the focus back to fishing repeating a comment similar to the one earlier.

That was it, we weren't letting the opportunity pass her by or let her sit there and think her fishing days were over. "Let's go, Grammo. We'll take you." She mildly resisted, but I think it was more out of being considerate and not wanting to impose on us--knowing she couldn't go it alone. My cousin and I went for a pile of dirt with a cup and the kids helped us gather a collection of worms. Jon drove her across the creek and we brought a folding chair and set it along side the pond. Clay, who'd been doing the fishing with the kids earlier, cast out the line and handed over the reel.

In the next 20 minutes, Grammo caught FIVE fish. Two bass and three blue gill (or maybe it was the other way around...) Two narrowly escaped, but that was partially out of letting the kids help her reel in those two. She caught one on that very first cast. There's no doubt, that Grammo has still got it. When the kids gave it a try she was right next to them coaching them along, "Okay, start to reel it in some... oh there's one! Jerk it! Jerk!"

It was such a joy for those of us there to see Grammo truly living in the moment and enjoying herself. So often she'll tell us about the dreams she has and the things she gets done and can do; but wakes up and feels trapped in a body prohibiting her desires. Last weekend we got to not just let her live out something she usually just dreams about at night, but we had the chance to prove to her that she's not incapable of all of the things she loves to do.

For us, it was a blessing to spend this time with our grandmother we love so much and get so many laughs out of. Such busy lives we lead...but there are always more important things worth slowing down to appreciate. It was definitely a "stop and smell the roses" opportunity.
